Saudi Iqra TV: “Would You Shake Hands With A Jew”? November 29, 2007

I never do this.

I never, ever quote Little Green Footballs. LGF and I rarely agree on any issues — LGF being a neo-con platform and me being, well, me. But my boy Nick posted something from LGF on MySpace Jews that I felt compelled to write about.

This is lamentable for a number of reasons. First of all — it is not as if there are absolutely no suras and no ahadeeth which allude to interfaith coexistence, on the contrary. But bigger than this, this shows what happens when people are raised inside of an abject lack of dialogue with any member of a certain group.

How many of these people had ever had a conversation with a Jew? How many of them ever met a Jew — for more than 5 seconds, and not in an airport check-in line?

Chat the Planet, a project from NextNextEntertainment, is an example of interactive dialogue-building that is sorely needed in Saudi Arabia. Chat the Planet produces things like Hometown Baghdad, a “look into the everyday lives of students in war-torn Iraq.” For the Jerusalem Project, they set up laptops and webcams — and kids on two sides of the world sat and talked and gave their opinions, perhaps the first times in the participants’ lives ever having heard such points of view.

Saudi Arabia needs this. Someone — because there may not be an internal awakening to do so — has to have the courage to say, “let’s see if this is correct, if the ‘Jews’ of today are the people referred to negatively in the Qur’an, or if they are really respectable ‘People of the Book’ who worship All-h”. These Saudi young adults need someone to initiate dialogue and build a bridge leading to them.

Because, if you listened to that last guy, he’s not really planning for peaceful idea exchange at this poiint.

Bridges — and not walls — must be built if humanity is going to survive and prosper.

So a hat tip to LGF. G-d willing, in a few years, Saudi TV will have Jews and Imams shaking hands in peace.

That is whack and admittedly we have a problem with antisemitism in the Ummah. I still give no props to LGF though, who are just as bad in their own way. Muslims need more self-examination and sometimes deserve criticism, but people who hate us all and want to paint us all with the same broad brush are no help. I have seen observant Jews deal with many issues within their own communities critically, and there is a very bid difference between that and say, the National Alliance using the same issues to impugn Jews. Plus, being honest, I’m sure there are plenty of Jews who aren’t exactly dying to shake hands with a Muslim either. I’ve had a handful of Jews (admittedly not many) become openly hostile to me after discovering I was a Muslim (having kept the name Dave and being white, it’s not immediately apparent), and I’ve seen quite a few blogs/articles/etc by Jews who clearly hate Muslims in toto. So I see what you’re saying but just remember; LGF will never want Jews and Imams shaking hands in peace.

Abu Sinan Says:

I am with Dave. As a convert to Islam married to a Saudi woman I would like to point out that Saudi Arabia is about the WORST example one could give of Islam.

I know many Saudis will claim they live by the rule of Islam, but that is not true. They live under a twisted mix of bent Islamic law and backwards, uneducated tribalism.

I have known many Saudis by virtue of being married to one. I remember telling one how the Prophet Mohammed took a Jew as a wife and he almost became unhinged. These people do not even know their own religion, yet they claim to live in a society led by it.

I am with Dave in the fact that I have had some Jews who became semi-hostile when they found out I was a Muslim. I guess it surprised them because I am white with a last name that is often associated with Jews.

These people were the minority. I have found, as often as not, that I could talk with Jews on a level I couldnt with Christians because of many of the shared aspects of our faiths, especially the absolute monotheism that is lacking with most modern Christians.

I pray with you that one day Jews and Muslims will shake hands in public, in Saudi, on the opening day of a new mosque in Riyadh!

As for LGF, I ignore anything they do. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
